Zirconium 702

Zirconium is an alloying element that is lighter than steel and has good resistance to chemicals. Furthermore, its high hardness, ductility and corrosion resistance ensure its regular use. For example, zirconium alloys are used in nuclear technology because of its poor absorption of neutrons, but also in the chemical industry because of its good corrosion-resistant properties.

  • The advantages of zirconium
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Good strength at extremely high temperatures
  • Good formability/ductility
  • Does not form strong radioactive isotopes

Zirconium 702

Although there are several grades of zirconium alloys, zirconium 702 is considered the only technically pure zirconium grade on the market. Zirconium 702 is a commercially pure zirconium that is highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion.

Zirconium is a reactive metal with a high affinity for oxygen. This causes a protective oxide layer to be formed. During a heat treatment process, this layer is enhanced. Thus, the surface is protected against various types of corrosion in certain aggressive environments. When even the best stainless steel and nickel alloys do not provide sufficient protection against corrosion, zirconium 702 can be chosen.

Application

Zirconium 702 can be found in:

  • Chemical technology
  • Power plants
  • Components of cooling systems
  • Heat exchangers
  • Auto parts

Zirconium and titanium

Zirconium and titanium share many desirable properties. For example, both elements are known for their strong durability and corrosion resistance. Although zirconium is more durable, more flexible, more hypoallergenic and less prone to corrosion than titanium, it cannot be used in every industry.
