Aluminium anodes

Cathodic protection

Aluminium anodes are sacrificial anodes used in cathodic protection. Due to their lower potential compared to the metal they protect, aluminium anodes corrode sacrificially, preserving the integrity of the protected metal. In certain cases, aluminium anodes are preferred over other sacrificial anodes due to their advantages. Aluminium anodes have a higher capacity and lower weight compared to zinc or magnesium anodes.

Aluminium sacrificial anodes for cathodic protection

The combination of oxygen, water, and metal leads to a chemical reaction that causes corrosion. Cathodic protection creates a barrier between the metal, water (electrolyte), and oxygen, preventing them from reacting and thus inhibiting corrosion. The material providing this protection, in this case aluminium, acts as the anode, while the metal being protected is called the cathode. There are two types of cathodic protection: sacrificial anode method or through an external power source. Aluminium anodes are an example of sacrificial anodes.

Applications

Aluminium anodes find extensive use in the maritime and offshore sectors. They are commonly used in:

  • Applications in salt or brackish water
  • Ships
  • Offshore platforms
  • Pipelines
  • Sheet piles
  • Metallic objects in seawater
