Magnesium anode

Cathodic protection

The magnesium anode is a sacrificial anode used in the protection of metal structures. By using an anode, the metal structure is shielded from corrosion. Magnesium anodes are chosen for their high chemical activity and negative potential, allowing them to donate electrons to the metal being protected. Through the use of anodes, the metal structure becomes "cathodic."

Applications of magnesium anodes

Magnesium anodes are the optimal solution for protecting underground gas, oil, and water pipelines from corrosion, as well as for corrosion protection in freshwater environments. These anodes act as sacrificial anodes, meaning they corrode themselves instead of the pipelines, keeping the pipelines intact and safe. However, magnesium anodes need regular replacement as they dissolve over time. The lifespan of the anodes depends on factors such as the type of pipeline being protected, the size and quality of the anodes used, and the corrosiveness and resistivity of the surrounding soil. The anodes are supplied in a cotton bag with backfill, a material that improves electrical conductivity and moisture around the anode. They also come with a 7-meter-long cable (6mm2) that connects the anode to the pipeline being protected. Magnesium anodes are commonly used to protect pipelines, tanks, and ships from corrosion.
