254 alloy
Alloy 254 is also known as 254 SMO. This alloy is a high alloyed austenitic stainless steel and is widely used in chloride containing environments. Due to its excellent resistance to various forms of corrosion (such as pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking), its higher strength than other stainless steel grades and its good weldability, it is used in various industries.
254 SMO is often used in marine applications. This alloy is also widely used in paper and pulp mills. Alloy 254 is:
- Highly applicable in aggressive, chloride-containing environments
- Sea water resistant (applicable in saline, halide-containing environments)
- Highly suitable for oil, gas and chemicals (for use in pipelines in the petrochemical, oil, and gas industries)

Processing of Alloy 254
It is a cost-effective replacement for alloys with high nickel and titanium content. An additional advantage is that alloy 254 is easy to process and weld.
