Control measurements

Cathodic protection

A CP system consists of anodes, a power source, pipelines, and measuring equipment that work together to provide optimal protection for the object. However, a CP system is not a static system but a dynamic one that responds to changing conditions such as soil resistance, coating quality, current distribution, and interference with other metal structures or electrical installations. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly perform control measurements to ensure that the CP system functions properly and adequately protects the object.

What is a control measurement in cathodic protection?

Control measurements are measurements that measure and record the potential and current of the protected object. These measurements indicate whether the object falls within the protection criteria defined in standard NEN-EN 12954. This standard also specifies how often and how control measurements should be conducted.

Control measurements are important for several reasons:

  • They indicate whether the CP system is well designed and installed.
  • They indicate whether the CP system is properly maintained.
  • They indicate whether there is underprotection or overprotection of the object. Underprotection can lead to corrosion, while overprotection can cause damage.
  • They indicate whether there is a short circuit or interference with other metal structures or electrical installations. This can disrupt or reduce the effectiveness of the CP system.
  • They indicate whether there are changes in environmental factors such as soil resistance, soil moisture, or chloride concentration. This can affect the required protection current and potential.

Merrem & La Porte B.V. specializes in conducting control measurements for CP systems according to the standard. We have a knowledgeable team of measurement technicians and inspectors who, with the help of advanced equipment and software, can assess the quality of your CP system and make necessary adjustments as needed. We provide you with a comprehensive measurement report containing all results, conclusions, and recommendations.
