HASTELLOY B-2 alloy

HASTELLOY B-2 alloy is a Ni-Mo alloy designed primarily for all kinds of reducing media such as hydrochloric acid at all concentrations and temperatures. Alloy B-2 possesses very high resistance to pitting and stress corrosion as well as knifeline attack and HAZ corrosion, even in chloride-containing environments. However, if oxidizing elements are present in the environment, such as cupro and ferri ions, then the corrosion rate increases dramatically.

Product description Hastelloy B-2

In the temperature range 540-815°C, the material is susceptible to excretion of harmful grain boundary precipitates which makes Alloy B-2 unsuitable for use in this temperature range. HASTELLOY B-2 alloy is used in equipment for the preparation and/or processing of highly reducing acids such as hydrochloric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids. However, applications are also found in organic chemistry such as equipment for the production of ethylbenzol, phenol from isopropylbenzol and acetic anhydride and pressure vessels for chloroprene manufacture.

Alloy B-2 is cold- and hot-deformable. Hot deformation occurs at temperatures between 900 and 1150°C. Additional solution annealing and quenching in water is required. The 540-815°C range described above should be passed as soon as possible because cracking can occur in conjunction with reinforcement. The successor to Alloy B-2, HASTELLOY B-3® alloy has increased thermal stability due to its modified chemical composition, resulting in greatly improved machinability.

Hastelloy B-2 alloy is available in: plate, rod, pipe, fitting, flanges and welding material in standard dimensions. Other dimensions, forgings and fasteners on request. Merrem & la Porte also offers cutting, sawing and plasma, waterjet or laser cutting capabilities.
