A magnesium ribbon anode is a sacrificial anode used to protect metal structures from corrosion. Magnesium ribbon anodes are widely used in insulating sleeve pipes. Magnesium ribbon exhibits high chemical activity and a negative potential, allowing it to donate electrons to the metal being protected, thus making it cathodic.

The magnesium ribbon consists of a thin strip of magnesium metal. This ribbon is placed along the object to be protected, such as a pipeline or a tank. By releasing electrons, the magnesium ribbon slowly dissolves while keeping the protected metal intact. This process is a form of electrochemical cathodic protection.

Application of magnesium ribbon anodes

Magnesium ribbon is used to protect underground gas, oil, and water pipelines from corrosion. It can be used to protect underground pipelines, such as gas, oil, or water conduits. By placing the magnesium ribbon alongside the pipeline and also connecting it to the pipeline, the pipeline becomes cathodic whereas the magnesium anodic. The magnesium releases electrons to the pipeline, preventing corrosion. Additionally, magnesium ribbon can be used for temporary cathodic protection, such as during construction or repair work. It provides temporary corrosion protection until a permanent cathodic protection system is installed.
