Titanium Grade 7

Titanium Grade 7 is actually a commercially pure titanium (Grade 2) to which palladium has been added. The addition of that palladium gives this alloy a high resistance to various forms of corrosion in oxidizing and reducing environments. Corrosion forms such as crevice corrosion therefore no longer occur.

Palladium is a particularly precious metal. This makes Titanium Grade 7 much more expensive than the commercially pure Titanium Grade 2. This alloy is mainly used in environments with high chloride content to prevent crevice corrosion.

About titanium Grade 7

Titanium alloys have several advantageous properties that allow them to be used in various industries. From aerospace to maritime industries, titanium alloys are widely applicable. Due to its good corrosion resistance, Titanium Grade 2 is frequently used. For even better corrosion resistance, palladium is added, creating Titanium Grade 7.

Applications of Titanium Grade 7

The weldability of Titanium Grade 7 (or Ti-0.15Pd) is excellent. This alloy is a single-phase material, so the microstructure of the alpha phase is not affected by thermal treatments or welding temperatures. It is used in a variety of applications. For example:

  • Anode/cathode cell components
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Air pollution equipment
  • Paper manufacturing equipment
  • Hydrometallurgical extraction electrowinningof
  • Desalination

Physical and mechanical similarity of Titanium Grade 7 and Titanium Grade 2

When titanium grades 7 and 2 are compared, it is noticeable that they are very similar. The physical and mechanical qualities are the same. They also have the same corrosion resistance, weldability and ductility level. However, the addition of a small amount of palladium makes a big difference to the industry. Titanium Grade 7 is the most corrosion-resistant titanium alloy available on the market. The chemical processing industry in particular makes extensive use of Titanium Grade 7, because here there are many machines that deal with extremely volatile chemicals. Thus, the metals in such machines must be able to withstand those acids. Titanium Grade 7 is capable of this. Moreover, it maintains the same level of resistance at extreme temperatures (both hot and cold). Since this titanium is otherwise identical to Grade 2, it can be welded in any shape or size.
