Cathodic protection
Rectifier
Rectifiers are devices that convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC). By connecting a direct current source, such as a rectifier, to the object to be protected and an anode, the potential of the object is lowered. This slows the anodic reaction down and protects the object from corrosion. Rectifiers are for that reason used in impressed current cathodic protection systems.
Non-galvanic anodes
If you want to provide cathodic protection without sacrificial anodes, you can opt for non-galvanic anodes with impressed current. In this case, the flow of electrons is provided by an external source, such as a rectifier.
Two types of cathodic protection
The difference between cathodic protection with sacrificial anodes and impressed current is that in the former method, the object to be protected is connected to a less noble metal such as zinc, aluminium, or magnesium. The less noble metal acts as the anode and will slowly corrode. This metal is sacrificed to protect the object. In the latter method, an external direct current source, such as a rectifier, is connected to the object. An inert material (such as silicon iron or platinum-coated titanium) acts as the anode. The current supplied by the source reduces the potential of the object and protects it from corrosion.
The choice between the two methods depends on various factors such as the size and shape of the object, the availability of electrical power, system costs and maintenance, the presence of other structures or stray currents, and government regulations. Generally, sacrificial anodes are suitable for smaller and simpler uncoated objects, while impressed current is suitable for larger and more complex coated objects.
