Cathodic protection
CP systems for pipes
Large pipelines of steel gas pipelines and transport pipelines in the chemical industry are essential for energy supply and industrial production. However, these pipelines are also vulnerable to corrosion, especially when they are underground or underwater. Corrosion can lead to problems such as leakage, explosion hazards, environmental damage, or high maintenance costs.
Designing a CP system for large pipelines of steel gas pipelines and transport pipelines in the chemical industry
Designing a cathodic protection system is a complex task that must take many factors into consideration, such as the size, shape, and location of the object, soil conditions, corrosion rate, lifespan, and costs. There are two types of cathodic protection: galvanic and impressed current. In galvanic protection, the object is electrically connected to a sacrificial anode that gradually corrodes away. In impressed current, an external power source is used to lower the potential of the object. In both cases, the required protection current and potential for the object must be calculated or measured. The design of the anodes, power supply, pipelines, and measuring equipment for the cathodic protection system must also comply with applicable standards and regulations.
CP system for the chemical industry
To protect large pipelines from corrosion, cathodic protection can be applied. Impressed current systems are typically used for cathodic protection of large pipelines. This involves using an external power source to lower the potential of the object.
When designing a cathodic protection system for large pipelines, various factors must be considered, such as:
- The length, diameter, and wall thickness of the pipelines
- The coating quality and damage to the coatings of the pipelines
- Soil conditions and soil moisture along the route
- The presence of other metal structures or electrical installations nearby
- Calculating expected lifespan
- Costs and availability of materials and equipment
