Duplex stainless steel
Duplex stainless steel
Duplex alloys are becoming increasingly popular due to the advantages of duplex stainless steel. For example, this alloy has twice the design strength of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels and tremendous corrosion resistance. Also, its good hardness, weldability and lower prices mean that duplex stainless steel is increasingly being chosen.
Duplex stainless steel, on the other hand, is not suitable for cryogenic applications, is limited to a maximum temperature of 300°C. In addition, it is more difficult to shape and machine than austenitic steel.
What is duplex stainless steel?
Duplex stainless steels are austenitic/ferritic Fe-Cr-Ni alloys with ferrite between thirty and seventy percent. Duplex steel is still fairly new. It was not until the late 1960s that people were able to make duplex steel that could actually be applied. Over the years the market has become increasingly familiar with the advantages of duplex. Ships that carry chemicals are often fitted with duplex tanks. Duplex steel is also used more and more in the offshore industry. The main advantage is the saving of weight, while maintaining or even improving the corrosion resistance.
When is duplex stainless steel used?
Duplex stainless steel has higher strength than chromium-nickel steel stainless steel and higher formability than stainless chrome steel. Because this alloy is highly resistant to corrosion fatigue, erosion and wear, it is widely used in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Duplex stainless steel is also widely used in desalination plants and offshore.
