Cathodic protection
Insulation joints
Cathodic protection is not only necessary for metal structures in contact with soil or water but also for metal piping systems that need to be interconnected. When two piping systems of different metals are joined together, a galvanic cell is formed. The least noble metal becomes the anode, and the most noble metal becomes the cathode. A current flows between the two metals, causing the anodic metal to corrode. This can lead to leaks and malfunctions. To prevent this, insulation joints can be used.
What are insulation joints?
Insulation joints are fittings that break the electrical connection between the two metals, thus interrupting the galvanic cell and preventing corrosion. Insulation joints need to be regularly checked for their insulation resistance and integrity to ensure they continue to function properly. A cathodic protection system cannot operate effectively without the right insulation.
Insulation joints at Merrem & la Porte
Are you looking for suitable insulation joints for your cathodic protection system? At Merem & la Porte, we offer Zunt insulation joints. These steel insulation joints are used to electrically isolate metal piping systems from each other or from the ground. They are applied in pipes for gas, water, and oil, preventing corrosion due to galvanic cells between different metals. The Zunt PN10 has a nominal pressure of 10 bar, while the Zunt PN25 has a nominal pressure of 25 bar.
Technical specifications of Zunt
- Temperature Range: -10°C to 70°C
- Design Pressure: 10 bar
- Hydrostatic Test Pressure: 15 bar
- Air Leak Test: 5 bar (for 10 seconds)
- Dielectric Strength Test: > 3 kV for 1 min. - 50 Hz AC
