What is cathodic protection?

Cathodic protection is a method of corrosion control through potential reduction. When the potential is sufficiently reduced, the anodic reaction of iron to iron ion becomes very slow. How does cathodic protection work?

Cathodic protection is a method used to protect metal from corrosion. After applying cathodic protection, the metal becomes immune to oxygen and other substances in the air that could cause corrosion. This is achieved by using an electric current to create a protective layer on the metal.

To accomplish this, a piece of metal, known as the anode, is placed near the metal that needs protection. The anode releases electrons to the metal, resulting in a protective layer that shields the metal from corrosion. This process helps maintain the metal in good condition, extending its lifespan.
