Cathodic protection
Cathodic protection
Cathodically protecting steel constructions is of great importance. Water, soil and steel continuously interact with each other, leading to corrosion. This process starts immediately upon installing your steel construction. It is therefore crucial to pay attention to the cathodic protection (CP) starting from the design phases through to constructing said installations. With our knowledge and expertise Merrem & la Porte is happy to assist you develop a dedicated CP system.
Since oxidation is a continuous process periodic surveys should be taken on a routine base and commonly once or twice a year. These periodic surveys provide the client with a clear and reliable assessment of the condition of their cathodically protected installation.
What is cathodic protection?
Steel is strong but has the pesky tendency to oxidate due to its reaction with oxygen. As this needs to be excluded in high-end products cathodic protection offers a solution to prevent oxidation. Cathodic protection is a method of corrosion control through potential reduction. When the potential is sufficiently reduced, the anodic reaction of iron to iron ion becomes very slow. The to be protected installation becomes the cathode in this process.
How does cathodic protection work?
Cathodic protection is a method used to protect metal from corrosion. After applying cathodic protection, the metal becomes immune to oxygen and other substances in the air that could cause corrosion. This is achieved by using an electric current to create a protective layer on the metal.
To accomplish this, a piece of metal, known as the anode, is placed near the metal that needs protection. The anode releases electrons to the metal, resulting in a protective layer that shields the metal from corrosion. This process helps maintain the metal in good condition, extending its lifespan.
Cathodic protection is commonly employed for metallic structures such as bridges, pipelines, and oil platforms to ensure their longevity and structural integrity. This enables us to use these structures for a longer period while keeping them in optimal condition.
